Call of the Curlew Limited edition 216/8 vase has been designed by Kerry Goodwin and is part of Moorcroft's RSPB 2018 collection. With their amazing curved bills, long legs and resonating calls, curlews are one of the UK’s most charismatic birds - and also one of the most important. Unfortunately, national bird monitoring schemes show breeding populations are declining sharply across much of their range. In 2008, curlews were deemed of global conservation concern and became listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The RSPB, along with the UK’s statutory nature conservation agencies, believe the curlew should now be considered the UK’s highest conservation priority bird species and a recovery programme is urgently required. Conserving and managing the mosaic of habitats required by breeding curlews is likely to benefit a wide range of other flora and fauna. In Kerry’s design, the curlew appears in the luscious long grass before calm blue waters. Incredible attention to detail is shown in the open wings of the curlew in flight, whilst elsewhere, dappled brown plumage is carefully applied in metallic oxides.
